Time in Bucharest

About Bucharest

Bucharest (Romanian: București) is the capital of Romania. It was founded in the middle of the Romanian Plain, on the banks of the Dâmbovița, a tributary of the Danube River. Its population is around 2.1 million (2016). Bucharest became the capital of Romania in 1862. For this reason, it is the center of Romanian media, culture and art. The city’s architecture is a mixture of historical (mostly Eclectic, but also Neoclassical and Art Nouveau), interbellum (Bauhaus and Art deco), communist and modern periods. During the interwar period, the city’s elegant architecture earned Bucharest the nickname ‘Paris of the East’ (Romanian: Parisul Estului) or ‘Little Paris’ (Romanian: Micul Paris).[3] Although buildings and districts in the historic city center were heavily damaged or destroyed by war and earthquakes, many of them still exist today. In recent years, the city has been experiencing an economic and cultural boom.[4][5] Bucharest is one of the fastest-growing high-tech cities in Europe, according to the Financial Times, CBRE, TechCrunch and others.[6][7][8][9][10] Since 2019, Bucharest has also hosted the largest high-tech summit in Southeastern Europe (Romania Blockchain Summit).[11] In 2016, the city center was listed as ‘endangered’ by the World Monuments Watch.[12] According to the Mastercard Global Urban Destinations Index, Bucharest was the European city with the highest increase in the number of tourists staying overnight in 2017.[13] According to the same research, Bucharest was the European city with the highest development potential in 2018 and 2019.[14] Another study predicts that Bucharest will be the richest city in Europe by 2050.[15] Bucharest is the most economically developed city in Romania.[16] The city has many congress facilities, educational institutes, cultural venues, traditional shopping arcades and recreation areas.
